SEGA released a new video titled Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence to their YouTube channel just yesterday. This video is meant to be a prologue (obviously) to the upcoming Sonic Frontiers game, explaining what happened to Knuckles the Echidna before the events of the game. I went through all of the official SEGA videos and teasers they released for Sonic Frontiers in order to give you a comprehensive explanation to the video and what it could mean for the game. Sonic Frontier releases November 8th for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC retailing at $59.99. Spoilers ahead! (You have been warned).
Sonic’s Newest Adventure
Sonic, Tails and Amy are heading to the Starfall Islands to look for the chaos emeralds. Eggman is there trying to research the technology of the ancients, probably for no good reasons, when he rushes his ‘artifact intelligence’ he developed to try and unlock the power of ancient beings, opening a dimensional rift. This is all shown in the comics Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence Part 1 and Part 2 over on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter. While in route the hero’s plane is sucked into the same dimensional portal caused by Eggman and are taken to Cyber Space. When Sonic returns from Cyber Space, he finds himself on Kronos in the Starfall Islands, his friends kidnapped and a new baddie trying to stop him. Typical Sonic plot points for another Sonic game. This is all of the major plot points we know of that leads up to the start of Sonic Frontiers. Some other story events happen like meeting an AI that seems to help give him information on how to save his friends and find the chaos emeralds and meeting a girl named Sage who warns him to leave and seems to control the futurist robots who attack Sonic. You take control of the Blue Blur and make your way through the open-zone platforming and linear areas to save your friends and find the chaos emeralds.
Knuckles In Peril
The events of Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence take place some time before Sonic, Tails, Amy and Eggman are sucked into Cyber Space. Knuckles is protecting the Master Emerald on Angel Island in this stunning anime style prologue for the game. He goes on a tour of the floating ruins, passing chao of all shapes and colors, before finding one that’s attempting to get a mask from under some rubble. after helping it out he finds a glowing gear looking object that he places into an ancient structure he finds. Upon doing so he is teleported to another dimension and has to face off against some fearsome robot monsters before getting bested by a colossal metal beast. He awakes trapped in some red bubble looking prison while he just looks like a digital hologram. In another video we see Amy trapped inside the same prison.
It could be safe to assume that is Knuckles was trapped here that some other Sonic characters like Shadow or Metal Sonic could be here too, but that has not been shown. I only make this assumption because some of the more recent Sonic games like Sonic Generation and Sonic Forces seems to have most of these characters in them. I really hope they do not just shoe horn some characters into this game just for nostalgia sake, but only time will tell.
The Sound of Sonic
Fans of Sonic will know his history with great music, just take Escape From The City from Sonic Adventure 2! Well the sound director for Sonic Frontiers, Tomoya Ohtani, is offering fans a behind the scenes look at the creation of the soundtrack. If you have a ear for good ear for music, or just enjoy some sick techno beats, click here to see his Q&A interview over on YouTube! You can learn about collaborating with ONE OK ROCK for the soundtrack, learn Ohtani-san’s favorite track from Sonic Frontiers, and learn how he approached the score for the game. He also has quite the history with the Sonic franchise if you are interested as well!
Sonic Saves The Day
In Sonic Frontier you will be platforming and light dashing your way around the levels and enemies to save your friends and retrieve the chaos emeralds. This game sees some new mechanics brought to the Sonic franchise with a skill tree, flexible gameplay styles, side quests and an upgraded battle system that should make the game feel more open world and welcoming to new players. I would suggest checking out the overview video linked here if you want a more in depth look at the new graphics and mechanics in this upcoming game. I am personally looking forward to this game, so if you want to watch me play it in videos or stream it live let me know on YouTube or Twitter!
