Director Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal take on The War On Terror in The Covenant

The Covenant

No man is left behind. Director Guy Ritchie ( The Gentlemen, Aladdin) and MGM Pictures have unveiled the first look at the wartime action thriller, the Covenant. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far from Home, Strange World) and Dar Salim (Game of Thrones) The Covenant is a tale of honor in a war-torn land. When one risks his life to save another, one soldier is determined to pay back that debt in full, no matter the stakes.

The news comes from MGM which gives us a first look at the story. the Covenant puts viewers into the shoes of U.S. Army Sgt John Kinley on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan. On a routine patrol, the sergeant is ambushed by members of The Taliban. Before being taken captive, the sergeant’s interpreter, Ahmed, saves him and carries him across miles of rock and desert to safety. Later, it is revealed the interpreter went missing after the engagement and the Army Sgt vows to rescue him to repay the debt. The trailer becomes a high-stakes action thrill ride and drama, setting the scene of a timeless tale of honor, set within modern times.

A different kind of story

Collider reports further details, revealing that The Covenant by Mark Davies and Ivan Atkinson. Both Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson recently worked on Wrath of Man starring Jason Statham and also helped write another Guy Riche movie, The Gentlemen. The Gentlemen, in particular, was a solid financial success and was critically lauded for its non-linear storytelling. Compared to other works, The Covenant is taking a more grounded and felt approach to its storytelling. Given the subject matter, this will be a very different movie from Guy’s more light-heard films. Whether The Covenant follows non-linear story-telling is anyone’s guess but expect a strong and well-told tale to tell.

Guy Ritchie has made a strong comeback in the last half-decade. In 2015, the director helmed the stylish The Man From U.N.C.L.E which was praised for its performances but underwhelmingly performed a tote box office. This was followed by 2017’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword which was also praised for its visual flair but became one of the year’s biggest box office bombs. Guy rebounded in 2019 with the live-action adaptation of the animated Disney classic, Aladdin, which performed better than expected. The Gentlemen and Wrath of Man were box-office successes as well. The trailer for The Covenant already has a distinct focus on the visual style that Guy is known for. We’ll have to see how the story fairs in this promising-looking war film.

The Covenant launches in theaters on April 21st.
