Your move, Creep! The NAACON Digital Show unveiled the first look at gameplay footage from the upcoming first-person shooter RoboCop: Rogue City. This new first-person shooter features the voice and likeness of original RoboCop actor Peter Weller. This new trailer shows raw gameplay of what players will come to expect from the same team behind Terminator: Resistance.
The Future of Law Enforcement
The trailer opens with a clear look of Robocop exiting his cruiser in a dystopic Detroit. The trailer shows this optical system coming online similar to how they appear in the movies. Robocop walks the wetted streets of a run-down town. Waste is everywhere and vandalized stores are lined from street to street. The ground is soaked in a blend of rain and garbage juice. You can almost smell the stink the air. Every footstep had the distinguished “thunk” effect as heard in the movies. Robocop approaches a suspected gang hideout. Unable to break into the hideout without a warrant, Robocop searches for evidence, discovering a used syringe and a user that seems to regret her decision. With enough evidence acquired, a warrant is granted. The bulky robotic arm of the law dispenses justice upon the gang.
The trailer shows some of the action that Robocop is capable of doing. Robocop plows through the door, sending an unfortunate criminal over the trailing and down the stairs. The rest of the gang responds with lethal force. Using his trademark, custom-made auto-pistol, bad guys are felled in an instant. The bad guys get it bad with chunks of flesh exploding across the room. As the trailer end, Robocop enters a large room filled with armed criminals. He is shown using a different weapon and using it against his assailants. Robocop’s targeting computer switches on, locks on to the nearest shooter, and fires. Time is slowed down as Robocop quickly eliminates the threat. With the last criminal down, Robocop gives a twirl of his pistol and stores it in his thigh. The last part of the trailer shows Robocop writing a ticket for illegal parking.
A history
RoboCop: Rogue City is a first-person shooter first teased following the release of Terminator: Resistance, an epic single-player FPS set within the world of James Cameron’s The Terminator. The first gameplay trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City was first unveiled last year and now the team is set with a release date of September 2023 with this latest trailer. RoboCop: Rogue City is based off the 1987 movie RoboCop by director Paul Verhoeven. Peter Weller stars as Detroit Police Officer Alex Murphy, who takes to the streets of Detroit to take back the city from viious gangs. Murdered and left for dead, he is revived b mega corporation OCP as the first cyborg police officer. Alex becomes Robocop, a cutting-edge crime fighting tool that takes back the city.
RoboCop went on to start a significant franchise. The roaring success of the first film leads to toys, two sequels, and multiple television series with two of them being animated. RoboCop also has a history in comics, with Frank Weller penning the lauded RoboCop versus The Terminator graphic novel in 1993. RoboCop also has has a small notable history in video games, including the multiplatform release for RoboCop Versus The Terminator. The last proper RoboCop game was release for Xbox in 2003. Titled RoboCop the game was a universal failure, panned by both critics and players for failure on every level. 2014 saw a mixed remake of RoboCop that was more modernized by lacking the satire the franchise is known for.
Looking Ahead
RoboCop looks to be another exciting game from Teyon. The team made a big impact with Terminator: Resistance in 2019 for being remarkably faithful to the source material as well as fun to play. RoboCop is a more difficult IP to tackle, especially given the current social climate. There will be opponents to the game’s release and the demand for the game to say something regarding real-world events.
However, what Teyon accomplished was making a fun game experience, pure and simple, with Terminator: Resistance. Players wanted to experience the world of the Terminator in the Future War, with solid gameplay and a solid story. That is exactly what they got and the game was universally praised. RoboCop doesn’t have to say anything to warrant its existence. It just has to be a realized game with the fun, authenticity, and immersion one would come to expect from a RoboCop game. Teyon has proven their respect for source material. I can’t wait to dive into RoboCop: Rogue City.
RoboCop: Rogue City is slated for launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a possible Nintendo Switch port.
