Unleashing the Power of Cobalt Core: A Sneak Peek into Brace Yourself Games’ Latest Creation at PAX East 2023

At PAX East 2023, attendees were treated to a sneak peek of some exciting games from the renowned game development studio, Brace Yourself Games. Among the games showcased was Cobalt Core, a futuristic first-person shooter developed by Rocket Rat Games and published by Brace Yourself Games. As one of the fortunate attendees who got to experience the game, I can confidently say that it is a thrilling experience.

Although the release date for Cobalt Core has not been announced, the game is expected to be released on Steam sometime in 2023. Fans of sci-fi and first-person shooter games can look forward to experiencing the adrenaline-fueled gameplay and futuristic setting of Cobalt Core when it finally becomes available.

What is Cobalt Core?

Cobalt Core is a sci-fi roguelike deck builder with a deep new single-axis combat system where you will dodge missiles, line up your cannons, and fight a bunch of tough bosses as you travel across the galaxy. In Cobalt Core, the player has the ability to influence the crew members by playing certain cards within their deck, these cards can be anything from dodging missiles or cannons to raising shields or restoring ship health, as well as lining up your weapons to deal damage to the ship.

My Run

During my gameplay experience with Cobalt Core, I found myself intrigued by the game’s unique loop combat system, which required me to carefully strategize my moves to outmaneuver my opponents. While it took me a few minutes to fully grasp the mechanics, the game’s hint system provided helpful cues to assist me in making the best move possible. The loop combat system in Cobalt Core allows players to plan their moves while limiting the number of actions they can take, ensuring that each move is deliberate and thought out. This added layer of strategy creates a thrilling and challenging gameplay experience that keeps players on their toes.

The game features hundreds of different cards that can be chosen and mixed into the player’s deck for each run. With each run being unique from the previous one, players are constantly challenged to find the best card combos for their playstyle. Additionally, the game offers upgrades that players can find throughout their journey, allowing for endless replay ability. One of the most exciting moments of my gameplay was unlocking a few overpowered cards, which gave me an advantage during my final boss battle. Speaking of the final boss, it was a challenging encounter that required patience and strategic planning to overcome, but the satisfaction of finally defeating it was worth the effort.

Is this a game worth checking out?

I have already mentioned that this is a roguelike game and you can run it over and over again, and there are different ships you will get to select as you unlock them throughout the game, which you can use to change your strategy during the space battles, especially the card deck that you use during the encounters. The game was one that I really enjoyed playing because it was challenging at times, but at the same time, I also enjoyed being strategic, regardless of whether I was playing against any of my opponents to try and outwit them and see if I could outwit them. Did I mention that the game’s pixel artwork looks great? The game looks very good, and it feels very comfortable to me. This is one game that I would really like to have on my Steam library whenever I am on the go, because I really like the way it looks and feels and perfect for those with a Steam Deck.
