All my friend who knows me, understand that I love city-building games, and during PAX East, I was invited to check a few of them, but one game that stand out to me a lot was Fabledom currently being developed by Grenaa Games which is a two-person studio. Dear Villagers has a great reputation to find great Indie games that players will enjoy, the ones that I have played from them are Forgotten City, Astria Ascending, and Recompile.
When I heard that the Dear Villagers booth had Fabledom, I was curious to check out Fabledom because not only this game had great success during the previous Steamfest with over 40k Wishlist’s and people loving the demo. For me, this is a game that I have been waiting for and wanted to check out because it has this cozy fantasy fable vibe and I couldn’t wait to dive to explore the game. Here is a trailer for Fabledom that is coming soon to Early Access:
Exploring Fabledom
When I first entered the world of Fabledom, the first thing I noticed was how beautiful the game looks and how much I just wanted to explore every nook and cranny of the game, so I began my journey into its magical world. However, since it’s a city-building game, I’ll have to focus on building my small village first before I can take a break to look at the rest of the world while I build my small village. Upon entering the game, you will be guided through a tutorial questline that isn’t too difficult because the game is guiding you step by step and pointing out what buttons you should press in the interface system. In my opinion, that was an extremely helpful feature because it eliminated the need for me to figure things out and press buttons that I was not supposed to press.
As I started building the houses for my village, I notice one thing it isn’t the same house format in other City-building games I have played in the past, for an example when I build a house, I can expand it as much as I can, in this case, to add a small garden to the home. There are a few other building options in the game besides the construction of a road, storage, and lumber mill, but the most memorable building I loved was the Farm, because you will have to construct a farm building and then also the field, and then choose what crops to grow. The building concept for the game is such a smooth system that it feels relaxing when I want to build my village homes and shops.
Along with the building concept and smooth UI system, the music in the game is so relaxing that it can almost put you to sleep and It can also help you imagine a fairytale world. These adorable graphics and characters in the game really make it feel like a family game. There are other creatures you will see like living giants and flying witches but it does fit into the world of a fairytale. Another feature of the game to understand is about relationships and motivations between other kingdoms. There is also a storyline with 8 princesses and princes all with their own unique storyline.
A story to look forward
As someone who enjoys city-building games and has a deep appreciation for games with immersive worlds, I have no doubt that Fabledom will be a game that I return to time and time again. The combination of a charming, whimsical aesthetic and a deep, intricate city-building system is sure to create a unique and engaging gameplay experience. One of the aspects of the game that I am most excited about is the ability to create my own story within the larger game narrative. The game’s setting and characters have already captured my imagination, and I can’t wait to see how my own village and its inhabitants will develop over time.
It’s clear that the developers at Grenaa Games and Dear Villagers have put a lot of thought and care into creating this game, and I have no doubt that it will become one of my favorite indie games of the year. As the game is set to be released on Early Access on April 13th, 2023, I’m eager to get my hands on the full version of the game and experience all that it has to offer. In the meantime, I’ll be spending plenty of time with the demo that’s currently available on Steam, and I encourage others to do the same. The demo provides a great introduction to the world of Fabledom, and is sure to leave players eager for more.
