There was a plethora of Mario announcements during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct. Perhaps the biggest announcement of the show, came in the form of an all-new entry in the Super Mario Bros. series. Immediately apparent is that it’s not a continuation of the New Super Mario Bros. franchise, but rather an all-new entry. The most shocking news is that Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases this fall!
New Features Await
During Wednesday’s June 2023 Nintendo Direct, the latest 2D Mario adventure, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, was revealed. The announcement came as a two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer, showcasing many of the game’s new elements. This includes full voice acting (for some characters), brand-new power-ups, level-modifying collectibles, transformations, and more! One great addition is the return of Luigi, Princess Peach, Yellow Toad, and Yoshi as playable characters, as well as Princess Daisy making her first playable appearance in a mainline game.
All-New Visuals
The most notable change in Super Mario Bros. Wonder lies within its visual flair. This title looks to be iterating on the vanilla New Super Mario Bros. art style while offering something very fresh. The visuals are reminiscent of that of old nineties instruction manual artwork, combined with Mario’s more contemporary appearance. In addition to the main graphical overhaul, the trailer implied that some levels may offer up different visual styles. The trailer revealed a dark silhouetted level, complete with an eery stretch mechanic.
Pre-Orders Are Live
Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s short trailer still leaves fans to wonder, “What other new elements are hidden within this game?” Thankfully, Mario’s latest 2D adventure is not far off. Super Mario Bros. Wonder will hit store shelves, and the Nintendo eShop, on October 20th, 2023. Digital pre-orders are now live on Nintendo Switch eShop, with physical pre-orders available on Amazon.
