Slave Zero X is an upcoming 2.5D hack & slash brawler from developer Poppy Works. Acting as a sequel to 1999’s Slave Zero, Slave Zero X sheds more light on its ludicrously dark and deranged dystopia. Slave Zero X doesn’t release until late February of this year. To tide fans over, the team at Poppy Works has released a standalone prequel, Episode Enyo. The catch, it’s a Quake mod.
Set before the events of Slave Zero X, Episode Enyo follows the story of the titular Enyo, an assassin who was originally contracted to kill the SovKhan, Slave Zero X’s tyrannical ruler, before being forced to serve him as the Second of the Five Calamities.
Episode Enyo is an officially licensed Quake mod, meaning gameplay departs from that of Slave Zero X. Instead of having a 2.5D perspective, the mod plays like an old-school first-person shooter. That said, this campaign will directly tie into Poppy Work’s upcoming release, taking place before the events of Slave Zero X. The story sees players taking on the role of Enyo, a highly skilled assassin. The events lead up to her initiation into the Five Calamities, playing a major role in Slave Zero X. In addition to new weapons and music, Episode Enyo contains five all-new maps to explore. Each level is modeled after levels found in Slave Zero X, allowing players insight into what to expect.
Episode Enyo is available to download today. Owners of the Quake remaster will be able to install the mode for free. The mod is officially available on Steam, GOG, Switchm Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS4, and PS5. More information on how to install Episode Enyo is available on Poppy Works’ official website. Slave Zero X releases for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 21st, 2024. For more news and reviews, keep it locked to Marooners’ Rock!
