In 2019, Mario & Luigi developer AlphaDream closed their doors. In the five years since closure, hope for a new entry in the long-running RPG series felt bleak. Opening up today’s June 2024 Nintendo Direct was the announcement of the brother’s next role-playing adventure, Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
“The bond between brothers has never been stronger! Set sail for an island-hopping adventure with the Mario Bros!”
Opening up today’s Nintendo Direct was the announcement trailer for Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the franchise’s first new release since 2015’s Paper Jam. Considering the franchise has released exclusively on Nintendo’s handheld devices, this is Mario & Luigi’s official console debut. The trailer opens up with a cinematic, showing off the franchise’s new 3D cell-shaded art style. This cutscene also sets the goofy tone of the story.
As the game’s title hints, Brothership will feature a nautical theme. Aboard the Shipshape, an isle-ship fusion, the brothers will adventure to the many islands that make up the world of Concordia. Prior entries in the series began feeling stale, with its usage of mostly Mushroom Kingdom residents. 2015’s Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam played it safe, resulting in a mixed reception. This time around Connie and Snoutlet, a pair of electricity-themed allies, will join the brothers to help navigate Concordia. This entry will introduce many new friends to help Mario and Luigi along their journey.
Mario’s next turn-based role-playing adventure sets sail when Mario & Luigi: Brothership launches on Nintendo Switch on November 7th, 2024. For more information on Mario and all things Nintendo, keep it locked to Marooners’ Rock!
