Yooka-Laylee Is Getting A Definitive Remaster

Yooka-Laylee Is Getting A Definitive Remaster

In 2017, Playtonic Games, a studio formed of ex-Rare alumni, released their first game, Yooka-Laylee. Inspired by Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie franchise, Playtonic’s Kickstarter-funded title would initially receive mixed reception, due to many performance issues. Although most of Yooka-Laylee’s issues were fixed, in later patches, many felt the game didn’t live up to its predecessor. Combining the 7 years of experience they’ve gained since launch with the critical reception they’ve received, Playtonic decided their next title would revisit the buddy duo. During the hype of Summer Games Fest last week, Playtonic Games revealed an enhanced definitive remaster, Yooka-Replaylee

Yooka-Replaylee brings a whole host of improvements to make this the definitive way to (re)play(lee), including a new camera, improved controls, ability tweaks, remixed and new challenges, modernised visuals and more!

According to Yooka-Replaylee’s official Steam page, the game will not simply be a barebones remaster. The game will include new gameplay mechanics and challenges. The 3D platforming collectathon will also feature some quality-of-life improvements. This includes a fresh coat of paint and modern accessibility options. The description of changes is vague, however feel incredibly familiar.

In 2005, Rare released Conker: Live & Reloaded, a remaster of the N64 classic Conker’s Bad Fur Day. This enhanced version provided entirely new graphics, completely overhauled controls, and remixed fourth-wall-breaking moments to keep fans of the original on their toes. If Playtonic Games is to follow a similar path for Yooka-Replaylee, Yooka-Laylee fans are in for a treat!

A recent Playtonic Games Q&A provided a bit more information on some of the changes. This includes changing up the game’s overworld and the locations of items, including the main collectible, quills.  They also mention that Yooka-Replaylee will not only contain remixed challenges, but entirely new ones as well.

“If you’ve played through the game before expect lots of new surprises and things worth checking out. Wishlist now! – Gavin Price

While no release date was provided, Yooka-Replaylee is set to release in celebration of 10 years of Playtonic Games. For more on Yooka-Replaylee keep it locked to Marooner’s Rock!
