On June 6th, 1984, the puzzle genre would forever change. Computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov developed the first iteration of Tetris during his time in the Soviet Union. Forty years later, what was originally a side project has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. To celebrate the franchise’s big milestone, Tetris Forever was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase.
Digital Eclipse, the studio behind 2022’s Atari 50, has officially revealed its next entry in the Gold Master Series, Tetris Forever. This collection compiles over fifteen classic Tetris games, while also exploring the series roots via an interactive timeline. Their latest interactive museum game will feature over an hour of all-new documentary footage. The documentary will chronicle the rocky history of the beloved Tetriminos and the franchise’s impact on the industry.
The minute and twenty-two-second trailer revealed nine of the available classic titles. These include:
- Tetris
- Tetris 2 + Bombliss
- Hatris
- Super Bombliss
- Super Bombliss XD
- Tetris Battle Gaiden
- Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss
- Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss Limited Edition
- Super Tetris 3
Tetris Forever will also feature an all-new way to play Tetris. Tetris Timewarp is a brand new mode that forces players to jump between different gameplay styles. Each gameplay style takes inspiration from the many iterations of Tetris, including what looks to be the original Electronika 60 version, the Game Boy port that put the franchise on the map, and more!
While no official release date has been given, Tetris Forever is confirmed to drop in 2024. What version of Tetris do you hope is available in this collection? Sound off in the comments and on social media.
