When the synopsis of Trial By Viking hit my inbox, I’ll admit that I was excited. After coming off the heels of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse a few months ago and Axiom Verge after that, I was hungry for more Metroidvania style games. Trial By Viking is described to have Metroidvania elements in its marketing and store page, however this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Difficulty is something that some gamers crave. Dark Souls is the biggest testament to this, as its one of the most challenging, but rewarding franchises to come out of the last decade. With sales of the series skyrocketing and sure to go up again with the third installment, (see Rob’s review) it’s clear that how challenging a game is can make or break its overall design. Stranger of Sword City ta...[Read More]
RPGs were a sacred genre. At one time, it was the premiere way to show off the skills of artists across a multitude of senses. The graphical artist would create the fantastical environments, using pixels and sometimes even more traditional methods like watercolors. The composer would spend days with his mind buzzing, cranking out themes that would become iconic for generations to come. Often this ...[Read More]
The challenging platformer is seemingly making a comeback, between games like Super Meat Boy and 1001 Spikes, games so frustratingly hard, you’d think they were the Dark Souls of a previous generation. Yet we strive on to beat them because, well, we’re gamers, duh.
No, you’re a ball of fluff! First booting up Leo’s Fortune on Xbox One throws you into a story narrated, by Leo of course, about amassing wealth and having it ripped from your grasp. All of the spoils from your hard work are gone, scattered across the landscape in a Hansel & Gretel breadcrumb-styled “come at me, bro” journey to find the game’s villain. You play as...[Read More]
Summer is in full swing, and that means here in the Midwest it is fairly hot – and I loathe being hot. Air conditioning costs a bundle, so I am constantly looking for more frugal ways to beat the heat. Going to the mall and wandering around works pretty well, but sometimes you need a more intense solution like filling your bathtub with ice cream and soaking in it. While simmering in my tub of barg...[Read More]
As a huge fan of From Software’s Souls series since the first game, I’ve been dying to play Bloodborne since it was announced. So far I’ve beaten the first two bosses and raked up ~5 hours playtime with more to come in the following days, but I wanted to share my impressions thus far before moving on.
It’s autumn, so that means it’s time for at least one new Assassin’s Creed game, keeping alive a now six year streak started by Assassin’s Creed II in 2009. We get two main-franchise entries this year: Assassin’s Creed Rogue (360/PS3) which continues (concludes?) the American Colonial era story and includes a link to Assassin’s Creed Unity (XBO/PS4/PC), which ki...[Read More]
”If human beings had genuine courage, they’d wear their costumes every day of the year, not just on Halloween.” – Douglas Coupland There’s the inevitable point during every Halloween party where everything begins to unravel faster than your friend Denice’s toilet paper mummy costume when she got stuck on a treadmill. “Sexy Mechanic” is bored with your fanatical ...[Read More]
In 1998, Tri-Star released their Godzilla movie. It bombed at the box office, due to misunderstanding what the appeal of the character was. Now, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have taken their crack at the King of Monsters. Does it measure up to the 60 year legacy that Toho created?
He’s a classic movie monster, and an allegory for the dangers of the atomic age. He’s an unstoppable force of nature, a guardian of the planet, and both an enemy and ally of mankind. Since 1954, Godzilla has been part of the pop culture of the world, and his appeal has continued through several hiatuses and a few bad movies. He’s been in cartoons, comics, and video games. With a ...[Read More]
