Video games as an artistic medium still have a lot of untapped potential to convey stories and emotions. We’ve seen a wide range over the years, but there was definitely a race to squish the most polygons into a single screen for the longest time. Now that the graphics of games are shifting more towards the importance of artistic direction with games like Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild, and Fo...[Read More]

It’s an interesting time to be a fan of sailing games. Normally a largely overlooked genre, March has seen the introduction to open beta or Steam Early Access of three vastly different takes on the concept. Make Sail takes an interesting blend of robust vehicle construction, open world exploration, and the vast loneliness of an empty sea to make a game that’s interesting from the moment it hits Ea...[Read More]
Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Switch continues to be a vibrant platform for indie games. There have been several stand out hits on the system like Stardew Valley, Celeste, and Overcooked, but there are quite a few games that can easily slip under the radar. This makes coming through the many releases on the console a ton of fun as it feels like there could be a true gem, just waiting to be found. W...[Read More]

Getting this headline brings a big smile to my face. I’ve actually been playing Earth Atlantis for the past week or so with the intent to review the game here on Marooners’ Rock. However, there were some glaring design flaws that halted my progress, and while I was completely ready to shred the game in that review, I could see some minor adjustments that could make it tons better.
Games based off of movies rarely go well, but I think Way Forward may be onto something with their latest project. Teaming up with Universal Brand Development, those kooky kids behind Shantae have cooked up a Metroidvania with classic looking 16-bit aesthetics to promote The Mummy, which came out last summer. This is the kind of game project that when it was announced, I legitimately thought The M...[Read More]
In booking my appointments and looking at everything PAX West was going to offer, there was one title that stood out to me from the beginning. As soon as I watched the trailer for Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, I knew it was going to be something special. It had this folk-lore feeling about it, featured some great music, and had an appealing rustic art style. I had to play it.
Independent developers have been turning to the Metroidvania genre for quite a while now, to the the point that it’s become a bit of a trope. Some developers can take the genre and explore new things, or pull off the basics really well, to create some of the best games around. Games like Axiom Verge or Dead Cells do this wonderfully. While Nintendo consoles are certainly the origins of the genre, ...[Read More]
