One of our goals here at Marooners’ Rock is to cover more than just video games; we want to cover movies, TV, music, comics, and more. A friend dubbed it “Transmedia.” Well, it’s time to make good on that goal. My personal contribution to help kickstart it is a weekly series called “The Best Bands You’ve Never Heard Of.” This new series will try to open up...[Read More]
Now, wait a minute. Before you start haphazardly dogpiling me with scorn, give me a chance to make my case. Let me assure you, this will not be about bands like Dashboard Confessional, Bright Eyes, My Chemical Romance, The Get Up Kids, etc. These bands are a perversion of what Emo was at its origin, and are not at all representative of its glorious roots. Did that get your attention? Are you now a...[Read More]
When I was a kid, I was restricted to the music my parents would let me listen to: 50s & 60s rock & roll and classical. Don’t get me wrong, I loved (and still love) that music, but I needed more. As I neared my teens, I discovered grunge, alternative, and more; I replaced The Zombies with Soundgarden, Wagner with Oasis. Then, in my fifteenth year of life, I moved to California with m...[Read More]
The mid-90’s produced some of the best music in the history of mankind. I know, a bold statement, to be sure, but a true and valid statement nonetheless. One of the bands that, in my opinion, really epitomizes the excellence of this era in music is the British alternative-rock band, Bush.

Now, before you all start to flame me about how Coldplay isn’t “rock”, it technically can be considered a branch off of that genre. The same way a person could say that Thom Yorke and Radiohead could be as well. I love Coldplay, and I’m not afraid to admit it. I don’t think it’s a rip off of U2, and there is no denying that they make some fantastic music. Chris ...[Read More]
Perry Farrell. I know, right? I bet you all didn’t see this one coming, but let me tell you why Perry is #33, and why he should be on more lists.
For awhile I’ve been saying how a post should be done compiling some of the best voices in rock, so here I am today. Unlike most lists, I won’t have them all at once and will instead choose to feature each one in an individual post that will come daily for the next 33 days. How are these singers chosen? Well, I’ll tell you how!
1984 was the year of Big Brother, the Apple Macintosh, the “Crack Epidemic“, and Purple Rain. Purple Rain, the title track to Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack to Prince’s Purple Rain movie (whoa, recursive Purple Rain achieved), is considered by many to be one of Prince’s defining songs. The single release has been certified Gold, and the soundtrack album has been ce...[Read More]
