Watching Midnight Run, you realize that it’s definitely a different movie for its time, with Robert DeNiro’s bounty hunting character consistently using payphones and asking for wire transfers, and eventually settling getting his acquired accomplice across various states through old-school transportation. But that’s the beauty part about a good 80’s comedy like this – times...[Read More]
Yes, it’s time for another Madden – and, like clockwork, it’s time for a number of fans to complain about how this year’s game fails to do anything significant over the releases that have come about the last few years. But not so fast – EA Tiburon has made some real strides with Madden NFL 17, and the game feels more complete than it’s ever been. It actually makes it feel…w...[Read More]
You know what we don’t see much of anymore? On-rails shooter. That’s not to say the alternative – actual shooters like Shadow Warrior and Doom – isn’t acceptable. Having full control really means something. But it makes me miss the classic shoot-em-ups of old, like the House of the Dead series, Time Crisis, or, God help me, the polygonal beauty of Virtua Cop. (Yes, I said it.)
Usually, there are two general types of driving games to choose from – either hardcore simulation, along the likes of Gran Turismo and Project CARS; or arcade, like Split/Second and Ridge Racer. On occasion, there’s a game that does very well in both categories, like Microsoft’s acclaimed Forza series, but otherwise, it’s a pretty fair division between the two types of audiences.
The last version of UNO to hit the video game front left a little something to be desired. Not because it wasn’t playable, mind you – in fact, the developers did a great job capturing the energy of the game, right down to the manic feeling of getting hit with a “Draw Four.” The problem was with the compatibility of Xbox 360 cameras, which, as a result, led to some users getting a...[Read More]
While I did enjoy some aspects of the previously released Riptide GP 2 when it came out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I felt some parts also worked against the game, like the vicious AI, the somewhat dwindled presentation (due to the fact it was originally a mobile game) and the lack of modes. Well, I’m happy to say that the developers at Vector Unit have addressed most of these problems, ...[Read More]
Translating a video game to film can be a tricky business. Sometimes you get something as glorious as Mortal Kombat (and yes, it was great) – and sometimes you get Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Fortunately, the team at Sony, working alongside Rovio Animation, have done a suitable job at giving the Angry Birds – yes, the ones from the mobile line of games – their own shot in a feature film. It’...[Read More]
Worms is that ideal strategy game that’s perfect for those that aren’t used to strategy games. It essentially pits teams of wily worms against one another in all-out “kill the other team” glory, but features a mixture of innovative weaponry and comical antics to make the strategic tactics go down a bit smoother. I’ve seen people that shrug the game off at first, only ...[Read More]
When Metroid Prime: Federation Force debuted at E3 2015 (yes, well over a year ago), it was met with some harsh criticism, as some players were simply insisting that it was a light spin-off from the series, instead of the sequel that so many people wanted. Hell, some folks were even lambasting it worse than the off-shoot Metroid: Other M, it got so bad.
There’s nothing like an 80’s guilty pleasure to put you back into ease of mind. And I don’t mean just the classics like Gremlins and The Goonies either. I mean some of the ignored favorites as well, like Howard the Duck (okay, it’s bad, but in a good way) and Ice Pirates (ditto…super ditto).
I’m always a sucker for a good platformer, especially one that has a “hook” in its gameplay, like the bionic arm in Bionic Commando that helps you get across gaps, or even the additional weapons of the Mega Man games – you practically need them in order to survive.
Batman games over the years have usually painted a violent, devoted figure, using a number of items to his advantage while maintaining a great deal of stealth to intimidate his enemies. Sure, some games have fared better than others (can we just forget the Batman Forever releases didn’t exist?), but overall, developers have really gotten an idea of what makes the hero tick.
