Tokyo Xanadu and Tokyo Xanadu eX+ are Being Localized

A Massive JRPG on Vita, PS4, and Steam

Tokyo Xanadu and Tokyo Xanadu eX+ are Being Localized

Aksys games and Nihon Falcom have announced that Tokyo Xanadu is coming to North America and Europe with a new localisation on the Vita. Even though the Vita continues to struggle to make a hefty dent in sales, more and more games seem to find their way to the system. As someone who really enjoys the Vita and even collects a bit for it, this is exciting. The Vita is home to a slew of JRPGs, which is what Tokyo Xanadu is, a huge JRPG with forty or more hours.

Tokyo Xanadu takes place in a devastated Tokyo as an earthquake ripped through the land ten years prior to the game’s events. Society has scraped together their existence to rebuild and try to retain normalcy. However, there lies a hidden danger. That earthquake tore a rift between the real world and the shadow world of Eclipse, letting all sorts of mind-bending monsters to interfere with the real world. Players will have to combat these Eclipse denizens in hack and slash battles if they want any chance to survive.

Tokyo Xanadu City area

Explore the city of Morimiya when not delving dungeons.

Just by watching a few trailers here and there, Tokyo Xanadu reminds me a bit of Persona in the best ways. The anime art style found in Toykyo Xanadu is gorgeous and the 3D models in battle look awesome, especially when unleashing powerful, flashy attacks. The distinctive duality of the evil realm of Eclipse and the rebuilt city of Morimiya is a welcome sight, both in theme and in gameplay. It looks like players will be focusing on building relationships and managing items and stats in the city, while all of the combat will be in the dungeons of Eclipse.

Tokyo Xanadu launches for the Vita in the Summer of 2017 in North America and Europe. The game released in Japan in September 2015.

Tokyo Xanadu White Shroud

I have no idea who the White Shroud is, but he looks badass.

For those without Vita systems, fear not! An expanded version of the game, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is coming to Steam and PS4 in the Fall of 2017. This version adds in some bonus content with new stories and a new quest after finishing the main game. A whole new character, the mysterious White Shroud was also added, giving players the ability to brandish powerful light attacks.

Two new game modes were added as well. Time Attack allows players to defeat bosses that appear in the main campaign as quick as they can. In Boss Rush though there won’t be a time limit. As with most expansions there will be new dungeons, monsters, and bosses. This makes for a real definitive version on consoles.

As far as physical releases, both limited versions of Tokyo Xanadu are a sight to behold for collectors and fans of bigger sets. Each set has been detailed below.

Personally, I find it strange that the Vita version is releasing first and as the base version of the game. I’m always surprised to hear about new games coming to the Vita and maybe porting over the newer version is a more expensive development endeavor, but having the expanded version on the go would’ve been awesome. Who knows maybe that’ll happen later on.

Either way, my first impressions of this game has me intrigued. I’ll always enjoy RPGs and the Vita is a great place for them. With the PS4 and Steam version being bigger and better, well that’s just icing on the cake. You can tell the amount of care that went into this release just by looking at the physical versions, clearly this is a game worth looking further into and one that Aksys and Falcom firmly believe in.

Look for the Vita version of Tokyo Xanadu in the Summer of 2017, while the PS4 and Steam versions of Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is coming that Fall. Those looking to snag the limited editions of the game should probably pre-order early as those offerings usually go pretty quick.
