Wild Mage: Phantom Twilight, created by the indie studio Luna Orion, is an action/adventure RPG set in an open, dreamlike world of floating islands that you are free to explore, save, and/or blow up with devastating spells claimed from your enemies’ corpses.
This world of islands, known as Etherion, is set floating above a constant cloud called The Miasma, which covers the entire planet and spawns monstrosities intent upon consuming whatever they find. The player emerges into a world in crisis, where those islands that were once havens are now sinking back into the loathsome clouds. As monsters and who knows what else begin to invade this refuge, the player, in their role as a Wild Mage, must protect what they can, aid who they can, and find a way to return the islands to safety.
“The motivation behind Wild Mage… is simply to make the game that I want to play,” says Lucas McCann, the owner and lead developer of Luna Orion and creator of the game. “As a gamer, I always wondered why spell casting cannot be more physics-based… in which monsters can be damaged dynamically rather than having everything represented by numbers and preset animations.”
With that in mind, Lucas and his team are creating a game in which what you do leaves a very physical mark. Hammers will smash enemies or objects to a pulp and swords will leave them like piles of sliced cheese.
“The floating islands are made of voxels and can be tunneled [through] or destroyed.”
The ultimate goal for this project is “a Final Fantasy like world, Diablo-like dungeons, [and] Zelda like adventures with next-gen mechanics.” The developers also hinted that the environment and gameplay is “musically driven.” We couldn’t tell you what that means, but we are excited to see how it pans out!
Although the game is still in development, Luna Orion predicts that their Early Access release on Steam will be toward the end of 2019. Furthermore, if they get enough backers to match their stretch goals on Kickstarter, they aim to release this title for consoles too.
