So it’s finally official. After a year of speculation and numerous lists titled, “Top 10 Actors Who Could Play Geralt,” it’s finally been revealed who take on the role of everyone’s monster slayer. Henry Cavill has just been announced to be the star of the Netflix TV adaptation of the Witcher series.
It had been rumored recently that Cavill had expressed interest in the role, and many were surprised. He definitely wasn’t anyone’s top pick as their ultimate dream-cast role, but that shouldn’t write him off just yet. Cavill has gone on record stating that he is a fan of the novels and game series. Cavill is actually quite the talented actor who has had experience on the small screen with the underrated The Tudors. He’s holds his own very well in Mission Impossible: Fallout. Still, many do have strong opinions on the recent Superman movies, as they’ve typically had mixed reviews, with many critics lambasting the series as a whole. However, I don’t hold Cavill accountable for those movies. He does what we can with the material he’s been given. I’m actually quite excited to see what Cavill will do with this role. Geralt of Rivia is a beloved character that many readers and gamers hold very near and dear, so their expectations are going to be through the roof (not everyone is going to be satisfied though, it’s just the way the entertainment industry works).
Given the right script and production value, I’m very confident Cavill can deliver. The show looks to be in good hands as it’s being helmed by Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who had previously worked Netflix’s Daredevil and The Defenders. As of now, there is no official release date, but Netflix has stated they are working towards a 2020 release date, with the first season running for 8 episodes. The show is looking to be based more off of the book series, instead of the CD Projekt RED game franchise. For those unconvinced of this casting decision, they should definitely check out this fan-art by Instagram artist BossLogic.
