Kara Zor-El is about to take her last flight. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl will end its run with a 20 episode 6th season, set to debut in 2021. The trade notes this was a joint decision by the CW and Berlanti productions. The final season is slated to start shooting on September 28th.

Supergirl centers on the exploits of The Girl of Steel, who – alongside the DEO – endeavors to protect the denizens of National City from many alien threats while trying to juggle her life as a reporter for Catco Worldwide media.

Series star Melissa Benoist posted a heartfelt farewell on Instagram:

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.”

“She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

“I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by this news. When Arrow ended, I immediately wondered which show would be next, especially since the CW had both Superman and Lois and the still-in-limbo Green Arrow and the Canaries on deck. For the last several years, it had become clear that the budgets for these superhero shows were spread way too thin, with many of the effects coming off as half-baked, something with which Supergirl, in particular, had struggled this past season. Despite this, I’ve always loved Melissa Benoist in the title role, having followed her since Glee. I was happy to see her not only get a lead role but find love with her former co-star Chris Wood. I’m really going to miss seeing her around the Arrowverse.

Here’s hoping the final season is worthy of the character and she gets a bit better sendoff than Oliver Queen did.

When it comes to gaming, he’s up for anything as long as it involves fighting games, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or Pokémon. He likes pretty much anything, except pineapple on pizza. . . His ultimate goal is to be a novelist.
