Rumors and speculation about the Nintendo Switch 2 have been circulating the internet for months. The recent Genki leak, at CES, combined with Nintendo’s official confirmation for backwards compatibility, all but confirmed Nintendo’s next console would certainly be a successor to the Nintendo Switch. On Monday, the Nate the Hate podcast claimed a reveal trailer would be dropping this week. As promised, Nintendo released just that!
The Switch 2’s Body is Ready
The nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer shows off the new design, revealing many rumored features and changes. The first big change comes in the form of dual USB-C ports. The Nintendo Switch 2 will sport both a top and bottom facing USB-C charging ports. The next change comes in the form of the kickstand. The new revised stand is much larger and allows for steeper angle adjustments.
Revised Magnetic Joy-Con
The Joy-Cons are also receiving a bit of a facelift. The first noticeable change is the additional length. The Switch 2 Joy-Cons are approximately one inch larger than pre-existing Joy-Con controllers. The design also appears to be slightly concave, which may result in a more ergonomic feel. Perhaps the biggest change comes in the form of how the Joy-Cons connect to the actual console. The rail system of the current Nintendo Switch is gone, replaced with what looks to be a simplified magnetic connector.
New and Improved Accessories
Due to the magnetic connection of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Joy-Cons will also be receiving new accessories. This includes a revamped Joy-Con grip attachment, as well as a Joy-Con Wrist Strap. The grip attachment appears identical to the current version, with the most notable change being its use of a magnetic connection. The revised wrist strap also appears to have mouse functionality, as predicted by previous rumors.
An All-New Mario Kart
The trailer also gives a quick glimpse of the latest entry in the Mario Kart franchise. While the gameplay was incredibly limited, it confirmed a few returning racers. This includes Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, Pauline and Donkey Kong. The new artstyle appears to be inspired by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. During this scene, the Nintendo Switch 2 dock was briefly shown, showing off its more rounded appearance. The last bit of news comes in the form of confirmation that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo has officially confirmed a Nintendo Direct for April 2nd, 2025 which will give a much closer look at the new hardware. Also in April, Nintendo will be running multiple hands-on events, allowing fans to experience the new console for themselves. More information on the Nintendo Switch 2 can be found on the official Nintendo Switch 2 page.
